Overview

My research focuces on the adaptation of digital systems to their usage contexts — a multi-dimensional notion encompassing the user(s), their usage patterns, the hardware and software environment, and the ambient context (location, noise, etc.). The goal is to propose models, processes, and tools to identify and characterise usage context, and to guide system adaptation.

This research sits at the intersection of several fields: knowledge engineering, document engineering, HCI, TEL (Technology-Enhanced Learning), AI, and machine learning/data mining.

Themes

Digital Accessibility

The objective is to improve access to and use of digital systems by people with disabilities — and, by extension, by all users.

My PhD thesis (Université Paul Sabatier Toulouse 3, IRIT, defended in 2005) focused on personalised interfaces for browsing semi-structured (XML) content, based on user-preference and context-of-use representations. This work was applied to visual impairment through European projects CONTRAPUNCTUS, LAMBDA, PLAY2, yielding publications (Encelle et al., 2009), (Encelle et al., 2009), (Jessel et al., 2004), (Encelle & Jessel, 2004), (Schweikhardt et al., 2006), (Encelle & Jessel, 2006), (Encelle & Jessel, 2007), (Encelle & Jessel, 2007), (Encelle & Jessel, 2007), (Encelle & Jessel, 2007), (Jessel & Encelle, 2002), (Encelle & Jessel, 2006), (Encelle et al., 2008), (Encelle et al., 2009).

After joining the SILEX team, I extended this work to temporal content (video), proposing models and processes for generating video enrichment based on annotations (audio, visual, tactile enrichments) and studying their impact on user experience. Since 2021, a major effort has been dedicated to NatBraille (COOBRA, INCLUDE — NatBraille action, NatBraille 4.0 (Région AURA), NatBraille 4.0 (édu-Up), NatBraille 3.0) — a collaborative open-source web editor for scientific/technical documents with both print and Braille views, supporting inclusion of visually impaired people in education and the workplace (supervision Madjid Sadallah, Vivien Guillet; publications (Sadallah & Encelle, 2026), (Sadallah & Encelle, 2026), (Sadallah & Encelle, 2026)).

Usage and Behaviour Analysis for System Adaptivity and Redesign

The objective is to improve user experience by adapting systems to their users’ behaviours and usage patterns.

Adaptive Systems via Explicit User Feedback

A first line of work integrated explicit user satisfaction feedback into the adaptation process (using decision trees, Markov decision processes) in video accessibility (Jose Francisco Saray Villamizar; (Saray Villamizar et al., 2011)) and robotics (RobotPopuli; Abir-Béatrice Karami; (Karami et al., 2016), (Karami et al., 2013), (Karami et al., 2013), (Karami et al., 2014), (Karami et al., 2012), (Karami et al., 2014), (Karami et al., 2016)).
